About

An atelier, not a label

Silai is a made-to-order atelier in New Delhi, founded in 2019. Everything is cut, sewn and finished in our own workshop, we hold no stock, and we have never run a sale.

We started because the fit was always the compromise

Silai began with a straightforward observation: the clothes people loved most were almost never the ones that fitted them. Standard grading is a compromise made on behalf of a warehouse, not on behalf of a body.

So we removed the warehouse. Nothing here is cut before someone orders it, which means the pattern is on the table anyway — and adjusting it to a real body becomes a matter of bench time rather than a different business model.

Seven years later that is still the whole idea. What has grown is the craft around it: the zardozi frame, the weaving families we buy from directly, and a stubbornness about weight that has cost us more than one design.

Four decisions we do not revisit

Nothing is made before it is ordered

No warehouse, no surplus, no end-of-season markdown. It is the decision every other one follows from — including why measuring you costs nothing.

We have never run a sale

Discounting work that took 180 hours by hand tells you what the house thinks it is worth. We would rather charge the right price once.

Weight is a design constraint

Every bridal piece is weighed before it ships and the number is printed on the label. Over 3.5kg and it goes back to the bench.

We buy the cloth directly

Our chanderi comes from four weaving families in Madhya Pradesh, bought without an intermediary and without mill substitution.

What we use AI for, and what we do not

Two things: finding a piece from a picture or a description, and drafting a new design when the collection does not have what you had in mind. It is genuinely useful for both, and we would rather say so than pretend a person sketched something a model drafted.

We do not use it to decide what a garment costs without a person checking, to photograph a real person, or to make a body look like something it is not. A try-on shows your own shape, unaltered — flattering the picture would be lying about the fit.

Where we are

Sunder Nagar, New Delhi. Everything is cut, sewn and finished under one roof, by the people whose names are on the label. Come and see it, or start from wherever you are.
